Gap Year Kit List


You've chosen your destination, booked your flights and now the time for your adventure to begin is fast approaching. It's around now that that essential question springs to mind…what to pack?

The packing process brings with it another few questions that need a bit of consideration before the filling of the backpack begins: What will the weather be like? What kind of activities will I be doing? How long am I going for? And so on and so forth!

Below we have compiled a general kit list of essential items for every traveller to ease the pressures of packing. It is not exhaustive and does not include items for specific projects (you'll receive a more comprehensive, project specific kit list after you book) but it'll certainly give you a few ideas of the things you might need:

  • Passport and other documents (obviously!)
  • Clothes that are suitable for the project, country and weather
  • A lightweight waterproof jacket
  • Warm jumper/fleece
  • Something smart (if you feel you'll need it)
  • Suitable shoes - walking boots, sandals, flip flops etc
  • Swim wear
  • A towel
  • A torch (always handy just in case)
  • Toiletries
  • First Aid Kit (from bandages to paracetamol)   
  • Insect repellent / mosquito net (mainly Africa/ Asia projects)
  • Medication
  • Sun hat/glasses/lotion
  • Travel wash
  • Camera (plus batteries and charger)
  • Day pack/small rucksack 
  • Books/music/games
  • Ear plugs
  • Diary
